Abstract
From the past to the present, Japanese films have a long history and unique characteristics. Especially

the works of film director Hirokazu Koreeda, who has been recognized internationally for his unique style of
authorship that reach a foreign audience. Koreeda’s Films won 66 cinema awards and nominated for more
than 110 awards from film festival around the world. For this reason, the director's works should be carefully

analyzed in four elements according to the author theory base on the conclusion of Doughty and Etherington-
Wright (2018), namely the biographical details, themes, aesthetics, and production. The study objective was: 1.
To study the authorship in Hirokazu Koreeda’s films. 2. To create a body of knowledge conclusion of Hirokazu

Koreeda's filmmaking method. The research methodology is formulating 14 films case study based on the
director's work, films analysis with film theory includes realism, structuralism, and psychoanalysis. and expert
interviews comprising 3 scholars and 2 film directors. This research brings the benefits with an understanding
of the relationship between the foundations of life and the attitudes that influence Hirokazu Koreeda's

cinematic identity and creates a body of knowledge for studying Japanese films including film industrial
application. Preliminary research found that 1. Hirokazu Koreeda grew up in a close relationship with his mother
and estranged from his father. He graduated from literature major and learn how to work from experience

directing a documentary. His work began with a combination of documentary-making method in entertainment
films. He experiments with storytelling techniques and film techniques. He often writes the script and edit his
own films. It developed into a film with a clear narration, easy-to-understand story line, directed Japanese and
French films. 2. Hirokazu Koreeda draws on life experiences and documentary perspectives to make a film. He

finds film’s theme from real news or events. Themes often focus on dysfunctional family, the weak state of
fatherhood including reflecting the Japanese social problem that are often overlooked by the public using
observational perspectives, slow narrative including avoid camera techniques, editing, and music. He pays

attention to directing the child actors and detailing the personality of the characters which is the director's
specific style.
