Abstract

It was curious that whether or not people can perceive ideas of an architect which convey through
buildings he/she designed. This research, therefore, investigated the level of perception through building signal
at the Student Activity Center (SAC) from 2 groups of student, firstly who study design and secondly who
do not,. The research used mix method to acquire the answer. The findings were analyzed and described
together with statistic data.

The data was collected by 3 methods. 1) Questionnaires which use for evaluating architectural signals
and collecting from 50 students in each groups. 2) Interview the 5 representative samples from both groups
to collect vital keywords which reflect their perception to each signal. 3) Interview the architect who designed
this architecture to recheck selected signals he used. The data from such methods could make us, whether
or not understand such designed signals can be perceived clearly by the users.

It was found that from the concept of the SAC which present “cheerfulness, exciting and enjoy”,

students, who study design have a better perception on the building concept than another group of student.
The building signals that students in both groups perceived in the same direction are building form, color,
materials, texture and pattern on building walls. The building signal that students in both groups perceived
differently are building floor plan and interior lighting.
