Philosophy, Importance and Objectives of the Program

Philosophy

Under the globalization mechanism that has been continually progressed throughout the past three decades, integrated concept for the development of Fine Arts Program in Creative Arts and Curatorial Studies is emerged to communicate the contemporary art concept to mass media and public by creating a process to convey the message through curatorial knowledge under global context that art is not a vague nor intangible matter. At the same time, contemporary art is inclusive of cause and effect, complexity, sociological and anthropological concepts, as well as psychology, in order to develop the knowledge about contemporary art. Contemporary art is therefore not a single paradigm like the art used to be during in the early period of modern art. From the above conditions and multidisciplinary nature of contemporary art, it can be seen that art/science relationship is not distinctively separated as it has been or viewed before. In contrast, under current social and cultural context, art and science are not being separated, however, they belong together in several levels through at least 3 steps including challenge, experiment, and creation. Both artists and scientists who create high quality works have started with the same beginning i.e., the need for challenging the norms of art or research. At the same time, the artists who are successful in their careers are found to regularly include an experiment during working process, while an experiment is the most important part to create an acceptable scientific work. To achieve the target of their work, artists and scientists share the same value, creativity is the most important factor to achieve such work. Development of the Fine Arts Program in Creative Arts and Curatorial Studies (International Program) would lead to the integration of contemporary art and curatorial knowledge to respond to the requirement of contemporary art and management systematically and being supported by a concrete academic system by using the core of the art to stimulate creativity. This curriculum has been developed on KMITL’s strong original base that has succeeded and widely accepted for science and technology production, and having the excellence in feeding contemporary artists to the society and further to international level. This is evidenced by the prizes and works from art contests both in national and international levels obtained in the past two decades.

In conclusion, the development of this Fine Arts Program in Creative Arts and Curatorial Studies (International Program) focusing on curriculum excellence is in compliance with the continuous expansion of creative arts industry to promote economic expansion in forms of various activities e.g., biennial or triennial arts festival, arts fair, music festival, and other art and cultural activities, etc. This would generate more jobs for creative works and mediators that disseminate the message of creative art to the public, such as activity designers, curators, artist managers, art and cultural organizers, gallery curators, apart from current jobs such as event organizers, gallerists, art dealers, etc. This curriculum has been designed in response to the expansion of the creative industry that has rapidly changed.

Importance of the program

The Fine Arts Program in Creative Arts and Curatorial Studies (International Program) is operated in accordance with KMITL’s mission to move forward to be an international multidiscipline institute in order to support the service and social development both in national and international levels. This curriculum is emerged to support the expansion of business and service sectors, including the expansion of government and private personnel under the creative thinking framework. It aims to produce qualified personnel to Thailand’s and world’s markets, as well as to apply the knowledge to build an innovation culture for sustainable development and self-reliance.

Objectives

1. To produce graduates who are able to systematically integrate the knowledge of contemporary art, creativity, and administration, taken into account the understanding of social and cultural context.
2. To produce graduates who are able to systematically plan, solve problem, analyze data, and apply the data for further study in other fields, and are prepared for working with others.
3. To produce graduates who are able to apply creative knowledge in building a livable society taken into account the connection of contemporary art and art management together with other sectors, including government and private sectors, and civil society.
4. To produce graduates who are academic excellent and able to work in international level.
5. To produce graduates who are able to work in response to the requirements of creative industry such as activity designers, curators, artist managers, art and cultural organizers, gallery curators, etc.
